Clean Edge Stock Indexes Experience Quiet Week

Clean Edge and NASDAQ's three benchmark clean-tech stock indexes ended
a quiet week with the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index (CELS) down
2.33 percent, the
NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index (QWND) growing 0.14
percent, and the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index
(QGRD) 1.71 percent lower
from the previous week.
The overall market saw similar movement - the S&P 500 lost 1.21
percent, NASDAQ fell 0.79 percent, and AMEX Oil was 0.08 percent lower
from the previous week.
CELS - down 2.33 percent for the week but 3.43 percent higher than a
year ago - tracks U.S.-listed clean-energy companies and is divided
into four categories:
advanced materials; energy intelligence; energy storage and
conversion; and renewable electricity generation and renewable fuels.
Of the 53 total component
securities, 10 experienced gains, 42 saw losses, and two ended the
week unchanged.
CELS' best performer for the week was PV cell and module product maker
Canadian Solar (CSIQ), gaining 10.22 percent. Rounding out the top
five CELS performers were
semiconductor maker Fairchild Semiconductor International (FCS), up
8.01 percent; stationary fuel cell developer FuelCell Energy (FCEL),
higher by 6.96 percent;
manufacturing equipment provider Aixtron (AIXG), rising 5.69 percent;
and Chinese solar product maker Trina Solar (TSL), up 5.45 percent.
CELS' worst performer last week was wind energy product and service
provider Broadwind Energy (BWEN), declining 12.65 percent. Other worst
performers included demand
management service provider Comverge (COMV), losing 11.71 percent;
energy storage device manufacturer Maxwell Technologies (MXWL), down
11.25 percent; ethanol
producer Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE), retreating 10.10
percent; and LED and solar manufacturing equipment provider Veeco
Instruments (VECO), 1.76 percent
lower.
QWND - up 0.14 percent last week but 27.68 percent lower in the last
12 months - includes companies that are primarily manufacturers,
developers, distributors,
installers, and users of energy derived from wind sources. Of QWND's
21 pure play components, 7 experienced gains, 12 lost ground, and two
were unchanged.
QWND's best pure play performer for the week was wind power project
developer and operator Japan Wind Development Co. (2766), up 11.14
percent. Other top pure play
performers included wind turbine manufacturer Clipper Windpower (CWP),
gaining 5.56 percent; wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems (VWS),
rising 5.39 percent;
renewable energy project developer EDF Energies Nouvelles (EEN),
growing 3.70 percent; and Greek renewable energy developer Terna
Energy (TENERGY), 3.40 percent
higher.
QWND's worst pure play performers were Broadwind Energy (BWEN), losing
12.65 percent;
carbon fiber composite material developer Zoltek Companies (ZOLT),
down 7.44 percent; Spain-based renewable energy producer EDP
Renovaveis (EDPR), losing 4.89
percent; wind turbine manufacturer Nordex (NDX1), declining 4.88
percent; and wind turbine parts maker China High Speed Transmission
Equipment Group (0658), falling
4.20 percent from the previous week.
QGRD - down 1.71 percent from the previous week - is composed of
companies that are primarily involved in the electric grid; electric
meters, devices, and networks;
energy storage and management; and enabling software used by the smart
grid and electric infrastructure sector. Of QGRD's 21 pure play
components, 20 experienced
losses and one ended the week unchanged.
QGRD's best pure play performer was Italy-based energy cable provider
Prysmian (PRY), unchanged for the week. Rounding out the top five pure
play performers were
energy storage technology developer NGK Insulators (53330), down 0.42
percent; energy management and automation company Schneider Electric
(SU), falling 0.48
percent; renewable energy inverter maker SMA Solar Technology (S92),
0.84 percent lower; and transmission grid owner and operator ITC
Holdings (ITC), losing 1.08
percent.
QGRD's worst performers included transformer, substation, and
switchgear maker Jinpan International (JST), losing 24.42 percent;
Comverge (COMV), down 11.71 percent;
utility industry specialty contractor Pike Electric (PIKE), 7.81
percent lower; electrical infrastructure contractor MYR Group (MYRG),
falling 7.23 percent; electric
utility specialty contractor Quanta Services (PWR), lower by 6.10
percent.
