Clean Edge Stock Indexes - Week in Review

Clean Edge and NASDAQ's three benchmark clean-tech stock indexes each had solid gains last week with the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index (CELS) up 4.88 percent, the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index (QWND) growing 4.14 percent, and the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index (QGRD) 4.46 percent higher from the previous week.

The overall market also had a positive week - the S&P 500 gained 3.10 percent, NASDAQ grew 3.94 percent and AMEX Oil ended the week up 4.26 percent.



CELS - up 4.88 percent for the week and 76.18 percent higher than a year ago - tracks U.S.-listed clean-energy companies and is divided into four categories: advanced materials; energy intelligence; energy storage and conversion; and renewable electricity generation and renewable fuels.

In the advanced materials sector, all five component companies were in positive territory. Energy intelligence had 18 components up and two down. In energy storage and conversion, eight components were in positive territory and two lost ground. For renewable electricity and fuels, fourteen components were up and one was down.

CELS' best performer for the week was advanced composite material maker Hexcel Corporation (HXL), gaining 16.06 percent. Rounding out the top five CELS performers were PV manufacturer Evergreen Solar (ESLR), up 15.18 percent; solar cell and module maker Canadian Solar (CSIQ), rising 12.60 percent; demand energy management firm Comverge (COMV), gaining 12.37 percent; and electronic materials provider Rubicon Technology (RBCN), up 12.29 percent.

CELS' worst performer last week was solar manufacturing equipment provider GT Solar International (SOLR), declining 0.94 percent. Other worst performers included energy storage product developer Maxwell Technologies (MXWL), falling 4.47 percent; lithium-ion battery maker Valence Technology (VLNC), losing 2.15 percent; semiconductor manufacturer IXYS Corporation (IXYS), down 1.41 percent; and geothermal power developer Raser Technologies (RZ), losing 0.94 percent.

QWND - up 4.14 percent last week and 32.65 percent higher in the last 12 months - includes companies that are primarily manufacturers, developers, distributors, installers, and users of energy derived from wind sources. Of QWND's 23 pure play components, 20 saw gains last week while the remaining three lost ground.

QWND's best pure play performer for the week was India-based wind power company Suzlon Energy (532667), gaining 14.13 percent. Other top pure play performers included wind turbine component maker China High Speed Transmission Equipment Group (0658), up 12.48 percent; Greek renewable energy developer Terna Energy (TENERGY), rising 11.22 percent; wind farm developer China WindPower Group (0182), gaining 10.59 percent; and energy delivery technology developer American Superconductor (AMSC), down 10.54 percent.

QWND's worst pure play performers were advanced composite material provider Gurit Holding (GUR), declining 3.08 percent; German renewable energy developer PNE Wind (PNE3), down 2.67 percent; wind turbine maker Clipper Windpower (CWP), losing 0.93 percent; renewable energy project operator EDF Energies Nouvelles (EEN), gaining 0.08 percent; and wind turbine developer REpower Systems (RPW), up 0.81 percent.

QGRD - up 4.46 percent from the previous week - is composed of companies that are primarily involved in the electric grid; electric meters, devices, and networks; energy storage and management; and enabling software used by the smart grid and electric infrastructure sector. Last week, 13 of the 17 pure play QGRD components saw gains while the remaining four lost ground.

QGRD's best pure play performer was Comverge (COMV), gaining 12.37 percent. Rounding out the top five pure play performers were American Superconductor (AMSC), up 10.54 percent; network infrastructure product maker Echelon Corporation (ELON), rising 9.98 percent; Chinese distribution transformer developer Jinpan International(JST), 9.29 percent higher; and network product provider ESCO Technologies (ESE), growing 7.80 percent.

QGRD's worst performers included large-scale power conversion provider SatCon Technology (SATC), losing 2.56 percent; energy contracting service provider Quanta Services (PWR), down 1.63 percent; energy storage developer NGK Insulators (53330), retreating 0.58 percent; communication equipment maker RuggedCom (RCM), down 0.44 percent; and transmission grid owner and operator ITC Holdings (ITC), up 2.04 percent.
