Clean Edge Stock Indexes - Week in Review

Clean Edge and NASDAQ's three benchmark clean-tech stock indexes each ended last week down with the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index (CELS) losing 0.55 percent, the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index (QWND) declining 7.67 percent, and the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index (QGRD) down 2.52 percent from the previous week.

The overall market also saw losses - the S&P 500 lost 0.72 percent, NASDAQ was down 0.29 percent and AMEX Oil ended the week 1.82 percent lower.



CELS - down 0.55 percent for the week but up 24.68 percent from a year ago - tracks U.S.-listed clean-energy companies and is divided into four categories: advanced materials; energy intelligence; energy storage and conversion; and renewable electricity generation and renewable fuels.

In the advanced materials sector, all five component companies were in negative territory. Energy intelligence had 12 component up and eight down. Energy storage and conversion saw three components in positive territory while seven lost ground. For renewable electricity and fuels, nine components were up and six were down from the previous week's close.

CELS' best performer for the week was electric motor maker Baldor Electric Company (BEZ), gaining 14.42 percent. Rounding out the top five CELS performers were Chinese solar module manufacturer Trina Solar (TSL), up 9.80 percent; power management device maker O2Micro International (OIIM), rising 7.02 percent; solar cell manufacturer JA Solar Holdings (JASO), gaining 6.05 percent; and PV product manufacturer Yingli Green Energy (YGE), up 5.91 percent.

CELS' worst performer last week was energy delivery technology developer American Superconductor (AMSC), declining 16.31 percent. Other worst performers included wind energy product and service provider Broadwind Energy (BWEN), falling 10.54 percent; lithium-ion battery maker Valence Technology (VLNC), losing 10.47 percent; carbon fiber product developer Zoltek Companies (ZOLT), down 10.06 percent; and advanced composites product maker Hexcel Corporation (HXL), losing 7.91 percent.

QWND - down 7.67 percent last week but up 21.96 percent in the last 12 months - includes companies that are primarily manufacturers, developers, distributors, installers, and users of energy derived from wind sources. Of QWND's 23 pure play components, three saw gains last week while the remaining 20 lost ground.

QWND's best pure play performer for the week was gearbox and drive train maker Hansen Transmissions International (HSN), gaining 3.37 percent. Other top pure play performers included wind farm owner and operator China Windpower Group (0182), up 2.63 percent; transmission technology developer China High Speed Transmission Equipment Group (0658), rising 0.51 percent; wind farm operator Japan Wind Development (2766), losing 1.95 percent; and wind farm owner and operator Infigen Energy (IFN), down 2.42 percent.

QWND's worst pure play performers were American Superconductor (AMSC), declining 16.31 percent; composite material maker Gurit Holding (GUR), down 13.59 percent; renewable energy developer Gamesa Corporacion Technologica (GAM), losing 12.11 percent; Broadwind Energy (BWEN), falling 10.54 percent; and Zoltek Companies (ZOLT), declining 10.06 percent.

QGRD - down 2.52 percent from the previous week - is composed of companies that are primarily involved in the electric grid; electric meters, devices, and networks; energy storage and management; and enabling software used by the smart grid and electric infrastructure sector. Last week, six of the 17 pure play QGRD components saw gains while the remaining 11 lost ground.

QGRD's best pure play performer was transformer manufacturer Jinpan International (JST), gaining 12.19 percent. Rounding out the top five pure play performers were power management product maker Power-One (PWER), up 9.15 percent; renewable energy project integrator Satcon Technology (SATC), rising 3.48 percent; communication network equipment maker RuggedCom (RCM), higher 2.09 percent; and energy storage technology manufacturer NGK Insulators (53330), up 1.37 percent.

QGRD's worst performers included American Superconductor (AMSC), losing 16.31 percent; solar energy inverter maker SMA Solar Technology (S92), down 6.99 percent; network infrastructure provider Echelon Corporation (ELON), retreating 6.24 percent; energy management technology developer Schneider Electric (SU), down 5.85 percent; and utility industry contractor Quanta Services (PWR), losing 5.82 percent.
