Clean Edge Stock Indexes - Week in Review

Clean Edge and NASDAQ's three benchmark clean-tech stock indexes all performed strongly last week, with the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index (CELS) ending the week up 7.29 percent, the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index (QWND) 2.34 percent higher, and the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index (QGRD) climbing 3.59 percent.

More moderate gains were seen last week in the overall market - the S&P 500 gained 1.33 percent, NASDAQ was up 2.61 percent and AMEX Oil ended the week down 0.63 percent.



CELS - up 7.29 percent for the week and up 58.58 percent from a year ago - tracks U.S.-listed clean-energy companies and is divided into four categories: advanced materials; energy intelligence; energy storage and conversion; and renewable electricity generation and renewable fuels. Nearly all of the 50 CELS components were in positive territory last week, with only three securities losing ground and one remaining unchanged.

CELS' best performer for the week was semiconductor maker Fairchild Semiconductor International (FCS), gaining 23.88 percent. Rounding out the top five CELS performers were wind turbine service and product provider Broadwind Energy (BWEN), up 18.37 percent; multicrystalline wafer manufacturer LDK Solar (LDK), rising 18.13 percent; Chinese solar cell maker JA Solar (JASO), gaining 14.88 percent; and Chinese vertically-integrated solar manufacturer Yingli Green Energy (YGE), up 14.51 percent.

CELS' worst performer last week was lithium-ion battery maker China BAK Battery (CBAK), declining 4.90 percent. Other worst performers included network infrastructure developer Echelon Corporation (ELON), falling 4.26 percent; carbon fiber manufacturer Zoltek Companies (ZOLT), losing 4.20 percent; microturbine maker Capstone Turbine Corporation (CPST), unchanged at the end of the week; and demand energy management firm EnerNOC (ENOC), gaining 0.20 percent.

QWND - up 2.34 percent last week and up 59.31 percent in the last 12 months - includes companies that are primarily manufacturers, developers, distributors, installers, and users of energy derived from wind sources. Of QWND's 24 pure play components, 20 saw gains and 3 lost value, with one ending the week unchanged.

QWND's best pure play performer for the week was Broadwind Energy (BWEN), gaining 18.37 percent. Other top pure play performers included wind farm developer Terna Energy (TENERGY), climbing 11.21 percent; wind turbine gear transmission maker China High Speed Transmission Equipment Group (0658), up 8.20 percent; wind farm builder and operator China WindPower Group Limited (0182), growing 7.78 percent; and wind farm owner Infigen Energy (IFN), up 6.19 percent.

QWND's worst pure play performers were wind Zoltek Companies (ZOLT), down 4.20 percent; wind farm developer Gamesa Corporacion Technologica (GAM), losing 2.02 percent; Spanish renewable energy company Fersa Energias Renovables (FRS), falling 0.50 percent; renewable energy developer EDP Renovaveis (EDPR), up 0.31 percent; and Spain-based renewable energy firm Iberdrola Renovables (IBR), gaining 0.62 percent.

QGRD - up 3.59 percent last week - is composed of companies that are primarily involved in the electric grid; electric meters, devices, and networks; energy storage and management; and enabling software used by the smart grid and electric infrastructure sector. Last week, 13 pure play QGRD components saw gains and 4 lost ground.

QGRD's best pure play performer was power conversion system provider SatCon Technology Corporation (SATC), gaining 14.72 percent. Rounding out the top five pure play performers were electrical insulator and energy storage developer NGK Insulators (53330), rising 10.72 percent; power conversion device maker Power-One (PWER), up 6.27 percent; utility network provider ESCO Technologies (ESE), climbing 6.07 percent; and electricity delivery technology developer American Superconductor (AMSC), growing 5.19 percent.

QGRD's worst performers included Echelon Corporation (ELON), losing 4.26 percent; electrical infrastructure provider General Cable Corporation (BGC), down 3.71 percent; utility service contractor Quanta Services (PWR), retreating 3.27 percent; energy management firm Schneider Electric (SU), falling 0.31 percent; and communication network equipment provider RuggedCom (RCM), up 0.50 percent.
