Oklahoma Bioenergy Center To Plant Switchgrass for Cellulosic Ethanol Production
April 30, 2008Source: Clean Edge News
The first 1,000 acres of "production-scale" demonstration fields for
cellulosic energy crops will be planted this spring on Panhandle
land recently secured by the Oklahoma Bioenergy Center, officials
say.
The acreage for the state's first switchgrass crop planted
specifically for alternative energy use will be planted on land
owned by Hitch Enterprises near Guymon, says David Fleischaker,
Oklahoma Energy Secretary.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, the switchgrass
field will be the first planted anywhere in the world for biomass
production. It will be managed by the Ardmore-based Samual Roberts
Noble Foundation.
Material from the switchgrass field will be sent to a cellulosic
biorefinery under construction by Abengoa Bioenergy in Hugoton,
Kan., about 35 miles from Guymon.
Smaller switchgrass and sorghum fields also will be planted near
Chickasha and Maysville.
