The NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Green Energy Index (CELS) is a modified market capitalization-weighted index designed to track the performance of companies that are primarily manufacturers, developers, distributors, or installers of clean-energy technologies. An exchange traded fund (ETF) is based on the NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Green Energy Index and is sponsored by First Trust Advisors L.P. The NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Green Energy Index (CELS) began on November 17, 2006 at a Base Value of 250.00. Click here to learn more.
To be eligible for inclusion in the Index, the security must be listed on NASDAQ , NYSE or AMEX.
Issuers of the security must be classified, according to Clean Edge, as technology manufacturers, developers, distributors, and/or installers in one of the following sub-sectors:
- Advanced Materials (nanotech materials, advanced membranes, silicon-based materials and alternatives, bioplastics, etc. that enable clean-energy technologies and/or reduce the need for petroleum-based materials);
- Energy Intelligence (conservation, automated meter reading, energy management systems, smart grid, superconductors, power controls, etc.);
- Energy Storage & Conversion (advanced batteries, hybrid drivetrains, hydrogen, fuel cells for stationary, portable, and transportation applications, etc.); and
- Renewable Electricity Generation & Renewable Fuels (solar photovoltiacs, concentrating solar, wind, geothermal, and ethanol, biodiesel, biofuel enabling enzymes, etc.)
The NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Green Energy Index (CELS) is a pure play index (not diluted).
A number of differences exist between our index and others based on the selection criteria and weighting methodology applied. Our goal is to track the industry and develop an index that we believe best reflects the opportunity for U.S.-listed clean-energy companies and acts as a benchmark for the emerging clean-energy sector.
NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Green Energy Index (CELS) constituents must pass a rigorous screening test:
- Listed on NASDAQ, NYSE or Amex
- Minimum market cap of $150 million
- Average daily trading volume of at least 100-thousand shares year-to-date
- Minimum closing price of $1.00
- Demonstrated ability to capture the growth potential of the clean-energy sector

The NASDAQ® Clean Edge® Global Wind Energy Index (QWND) began on June 26, 2008 at a base value of 250.00. Click here to learn more.
To be included in the Index, a security must meet the following criteria: the issuer of the security must be classified as a producer, distributor, or manufacturer of wind energy and wind turbines according to Clean Edge; the security must be listed on an eligible global stock exchange.
The component securities are classified as Pure Play or Multi-National.Pure Play securities will be given a collective weight of 90% and the multi-national securities will be given a collective weight of 10%.
- Pure Play (majority of business activities must be wind energy related)
- Multi-National (must have over $1 billion revenue from wind-related activities OR own/operate more than 1000MW of installed wind capacity)
In general, securities listed on the following exchanges will not be considered eligible for Index inclusion:

The NASDAQ OMX® Clean Edge® Smart Grid Infrastructure Index (QGRD) began on September 22, 2009 at a base value of 250.00. Click here to learn more.
To be included in the Index, a security must meet the following criteria:
- the issuer of the security must be classified as smart grid, electric infrastructure and/or other grid related activities company according to Clean Edge;
- the security must be listed on an index-eligible global stock exchange approved by the Index Administrator
The component securities are classified as Pure Play or Diversified. Pure Play securities are given a collective weight of 80% and the diversified securities are given a collective weight of 20% in the Index.
- Pure Play (must receive 50 percent or more of their revenue from smart grid, electric infrastructure, and/or other grid-related activities)
- Diversified (must receive between 10-50 percent, or $1 billion, in revenue from smart grid and grid infrastructure activities)
QGRD is the world’s first exchange-listed index to track smart grid and electric infrastructure companies. Our goal is to act as a transparent and liquid benchmark for companies active in this sector.
NASDAQ OMX® Clean Edge® Smart Grid Infrastructure Index (QGRD) constituents must pass a rigorous screening test:
- Must be listed on eligible exchange
- Must have a minimum float-adjusted worldwide market capitalization of $100 million
- Must have a minimum three-month average daily dollar trading volume of $500 thousand
- Must pass qualitative criteria established by Clean Edge
